Plan, schedule, track and analyze irrigation timing strategies field by field IMO is decision support software designed for site-specific irrigation management optimization: More Profit per Drop. When water supplies are limited or production costs are high, farm profits can generally be increased by some degree of partial irrigation, or deficit irrigation, and the increased farm profits will be accompanied by increased water use efficiency (WUE). IMO works through a process of field calibration.
Once IMO is calibrated to a field the irrigator can accurately predict how each irrigation during the season will influence the soil moisture profile based on field’s specific operational conditions (weather, irrigation system, soils, run times, etc.). This makes it possible for the user to look, in advance of the season, at different irrigation timing strategies and anticipate how different levels of water use will play out in soil moisture and ET. This makes it possible to identify what the pumping plant, irrigation system, soils, climate and labor constraints will allow under different management and water use scenarios. Once the field is calibrated, IMO serves as a site-specific planning and irrigation scheduling tool: the irrigator decides on an amount of water and a general strategy for the crop and location, and IMO generates a schedule of anticipated the seasonal dates and irrigation amounts. IMO tracks daily weather conditions, ET and soil moisture readings. The irrigator can adjust the schedule at any time as needed (or desired) as the season evolves.
combines real-time monitoring and predictive analytics to calculate and track a range of possible irrigation timing strategies for any given location
generates full season irrigation schedules and recalculates them on the fly, as needed.
quickly adjusts for and adapt to rain events, labor constraints, energy costs, pump problems, and other irrigation timing considerations.
calculates the percolation rates, irrigation timing, input cost, yield impacts and economic value of each irrigation*, and uses these field data to build a crop production function for each field.
works with any pressurized irrigation system
calculates and schedules irrigation strategies to optimize your yield targets and economic goals while matching available water to critical growth stages over the season.
Targets full and partial irrigation strategies Crop yield is tightly linked to crop water use as measured by evapotranspiration (ET). IMO calculates irrigation schedules for the season based onET management strategies. The irrigator decides on a crop and a goal for each field and chooses an irrigation strategy, such as:
100% ET replacement (full irrigation) for maximum yields
Partial irrigation (% ET) to optimize economics or quality
Targeted stress at optimal growth stages
Mild stress for the whole growth cycle
Full irrigation only at critical growth stages
Any strategy of your design*
*IMO can also define a strategy used in one location and make it transferable to the unique constraints of other locations.
IMO gives the irrigator more control over water and energy costs
Connects with local, regional and global weather networks
Translates research into field specific conditions, accounting for local variables
Applies complex system modeling to irrigation management on a field by field basis
Builds robust analytical profiles of a field: the crop, soil, weather, climate, irrigation system and the irrigator's preferences
Tracks and calibrates crop water demand against weather conditions and soil moisture readings, in real time
Learns from each season to improve future accuracy.
Links irrigation timing and amounts to plant indicators (i.e., plant water status, sap flow, stomatal conductance, trunk diameter fluctuation, root growth, infrared thermometry, FLIR, remote sensing and aerial imaging).
Generates yield production functions per the specific constraints of a crop and field
Calculates irrigation schedules to match crop growth stages
Calculates irrigation schedules to optimize energy use
Calculates irrigation schedules to manage labor constraints
Calculates in advance how each irrigation will impact crop yield (%)*
Calculates in advance yield impact vs input cost of each irrigation
Coordinates irrigation plans for one or multiple fields (conjunctive scheduling)
Recalculates irrigation schedules on the fly as needed or desired
Previously a university research tool, IMO accurately manages crop stress for economic optimization, quality targets or expanded production per acre-foot of water. This requires more than real time monitoring. Currently the most versatile approach to irrigation management, with a simple data display.
*Agriculture operates within a complex open system at the nexus of physics, chemistry, biology, economics and human cultural practices. Due to the challenging and dynamic nature of these systems, without good historical data the yield modeling IMO is designed for can take a season or more to dial in. Detailed knowledge of a field or fields is required to run the more sophisticated irrigation strategies.
